Abstract: This article sheds light on the Euro-Atlantic discourse in Georgia by situating it in a wider frame. It provides an analysis of its Euro-Atlantic orientation by presenting it as a continuation of past efforts to involve European powers in Georgia affairs and highlights changing trends in this aspect of contemporary foreign policy, Far from determining whether or not the Georgians are European, the different arguments that have been used to support Georgian “Europeans” are evaluated to assess its role in the national identity construction process. Focusing primarily on the United National Movement government led by Mikheil Saakashvili, we demonstrate how the National Movement government has been employed domestically by the political elite as a legitimacy management strategy and explore its function in seeking Western patronage, a key foreign policy goal.

　　内容摘要：本文在一个更宽的视角阐明了在格鲁吉亚进行的欧洲-大西洋对话。本文提供了对格鲁吉亚的欧洲大西洋定位的分析，此定位是通过过去持续的把欧洲国家卷入到格鲁吉亚内部事务实现的。本文强调了当代外交政策这一方面改变的趋势，不用决定格鲁吉亚人是否是欧洲人，用于支持格鲁吉亚人是欧洲人的各种争论已经被用来评估这一身份在国民身份建立过程中的作用。本文主要讨论米克希尔.萨卡什维利领导的联合国民运动党政府，我们指出，政治精英在国内把国民运动党政府当成了一种立法管理策略,他们认为,这个政府的功能就是谋求西方赞助,这是一个核心外交政策目标。
